A Fun WOW Moment Reveals….

The good news is- yes, I still play WOW.  I was gone a week to start playing ESO,- a week mind you!- and I guess some people got worried.

The bad news is- you can’t duel naked in WOW any more.

What?

I had scheduled a naked dueling contest for my guild last night.  (Well, level 1 clothes for some that didn’t have enough bag space to get naked).  It used to be in WOW that if you took off your gear to be naked, your health would go down accordingly.  Now that is not the case, but I had not thought about this when planning the event.

Mistaken Circumstances

When I started dueling the first guildie participating, I realized that neither one of us were damaging each other.  I pulled up the “what happened to me” log, and it was showing that I was only doing 14 damage to her a hit.  So obviously, this was not going to work.  We decided to duel each other wearing our PVE gear since neither one of us really has a PVP set yet, and neither one of us has a high item level.

I beat this druid, a mage, and a priest.  I won all three.  Then I realized that the priest was not wearing the same level gear as us, so we rematched.  He won.  The prize was Lil Bad Wolf pet from Naxxramas.

I also learned during this event… never duel anyone outside the guild for fun with 90 points higher item level.  That could be bad.

Tonight there was a “Meet Your Guildies” event hosted by me for The Anti Drama Commonwealth (four guilds) on Proudmoore-US server.  Isayuri is GM, and I am event committee leader.

The icebreaker games– modified for WOW from a blog called Insight (see copyright attribute at the bottom) and found on Google- were played on ventrilo and are listed below.  I also included some examples:

My Name Is? – Everyone states their name to intro + adjective that describes them starting with the same letter as the name… this name will be what you are referred to during night*.   <My name was Mighty Mer.>

* During this time I had everyone in the vent group ingame mail me some things for two later games (2 Truths… and Cat in The Hat).

Two Truths and a Lie – The first game, which was sent ingame mail*, was Two Truths….  I had them send me two truths about themselves and one lie (with the lie marked on the message).

Everyone on vent then can guess 1) who the person who is being read about is and 2) which statement is the lie.  I gave five points (maybe this should go down to two or three?) for guessing the person and one point for picking the lie.  The winner, Rainelyn, received a Cockatiel pet.

We then told who the Zombie Apocalypse Team would be for each person.  It is a facebook game based on birth month, birthday, and the color shirt you are wearing right now.  Look:

zombie

We gave a prize to Ravenlee- Mist-Piercing Goggles– for the most awesome team because she was wearing three shirts.  Plus one of them was Wolverine-colored!  So that was 5 team members plus some lol.

Conversation Starters– Random questions like “Who Has the Most Pets?” and “Who Has Travelled the Farthest from Home?” were asked.  I also asked a few WOW related questions.

Cat in the Hat– I had everyone send me an ingame question (*at the beginning) using any subject they are knowledgeable about.  Make sure they are appropriate if guild rules would require it….

The question I wrote, for example, was- Who wrote the Headless Horseman?

The leader reads the name of the question then reads the question.  Our questions were all pretty hard, but we had one person guess two right- Rainelyn.  She won a Red Wine Glass offhand.

Thanks and credit to Grahame Knox for some of the icebreaker ideas-

Hosting a WOW Fireworks Event

You mainly see fireworks in WOW for major holidays, but I thought I would write this post while I am thinking about it. (old age and all)

I have some screenshots of different times I have been to fireworks events in WOW that were put on by players.  One time it was a friend who was an engineer, another time we had a guild legendary party, etc.  Instead of trying to show it with a screenshot though, here is a video I found on youtube:

There are lots of fireworks you can gather for an event like this in WOW:

* MADE BY ENGINEERS – some of these are new for Pandaria.  The ones with (*) require a firework launcher, which engineers can make/use OR can be bought during festivals.
1) Red Firework
2) Blue Firework
3) Green Firework
4) Snake Burst Firework
5) Jade Blossom Firework
6) Autumn Flower Firework
7) Celestial Firework
8) Grand Celebration Firework
9) Serpent’s Heart Firework
   10) Large Red Rocket Cluster and Red Rocket Cluster *
11) Large Green Rocket Cluster and Green Rocket Cluster *
12) Large Blue Rocket Cluster and Blue Rocket Cluster *
13) Large Green Rocket and Small Green Rocket *
14) Large Red Rocket and Small Red Rocket *
15) Large Blue Rocket and Small Blue Rocket *
*) Firework Launcher

* CALENDAR OR EVENT SPECIFIC FIREWORKS
1) Darkmoon Firework – can only be used during Darkmoon Faire
2) Dalaran Firework – received when hitting 80
3) Sold By Midsummer Fire Festival Vendor (A) – Stormwind City, Ironforge
4) Sold By Midsummer Fire Festival Vendor (H) – Ogrimmar
5) Sold By Midsummer Fire Festival Vendor (N) – STV
6) Lunar Festival Fireworks Pack – from coins of ancestry vendor during festival,
includes some of each type

* FIREWORKS VENDORS
1) Red Fireworks Rocket
2) Red Streak Firework
3) Yellow Rose Firework
    4) Midsummer Ground Flower – once festival only, now are available now in Jade
Forest

* HARD TO GET FIREWORKS
1) Perpetual Purple Firework – trading card
2) Pandaren Firework Launcher – drop

After gathering all your fireworks, spread the word about your event in guild chat and/or trade.  You will want everyone to gather in an open area.

Fireworks usually only stack in 5s, which takes up a lot of bag space, plus you will want multiple fireworks going off at one time.  For this reason, you will need volunteers to help you lay down fireworks.  I usually give a few others stacks of fireworks that don’t require launchers.

Fireworks events are always a hit, hope this list helps some of you out.

An easy way to get to know new guild members- short icebreaker games on ventrilo.

It is best to have older members participate as well as the newer members.  These are the ones we did:

1) Guess Who.  You mail five things about yourself to the leader.  Four things that are true and one thing that is untrue.  The leader reads them on vent, and everyone first tries to guess who it is.  Then they guess which one is not true.

2) Desert Island.  You are stuck on a desert island- name 1 piece of music, one book, and one luxury item you would take.  (you cannot take a boat to leave the island)

3) Random questions.  Ask the group things like- Where is one place in the world you would want to travel? etc.

End of Summer Guild Party

My guild on Terokkar, The East Kingdom, had an end-of-summer party a few weeks ago.  Sorry I am just now getting around to writing about it….

The party location was the beach at Bittertide Lake, which is West of Glimmering Pillar in Sholazar Basin.

Start of the party

After the usual booze hand-outs, we started the party with a Heavy Leather Ball Contest.  Everyone was given a heavy leather ball.  The objective was to throw balls like crazy, and the person with the fewest balls left in their bags would be the winner.

This is the first time I have attempted to do this game at a party, and it didn’t really work out like I thought it would.  I don’t know if people were playing without the required number of open bag spaces (eight) or someone was afk, but we ended up having seven winners from a tie.  This is fine if you can afford that many prizes (I gave them Winterspring Cubs), but just be aware.

We then voted on best dressed for the party, which was a prize of 500g.

After that, we did another new contest: Skinny-Dipping Diver Dueling.  The rules: Standing on the slope between shallow and deep water two toons will duel under water with no gear on.  Each player starts with eight points.  If any part of the player’s body moves above water during the duel, they lose one point.  The winner of the duel receives two points.  So the highest possible score overall is ten points.

The trick to this contest was making sure people were staying on the divider between the shallow and deep parts of the lake.  If they are not following that rule, it really isn’t as challenging.  We did have one winner with ten points, and he received the Mini Mount WOW loot card.

The last contest was a number-guessing-game based on the trap door located in the lake area.  The trap door has coordinates you can see when you scroll over it.  I have been told they are some kind of Lost reference, but I have no idea.  In order to hold this contest, you need to make sure the party takes place far enough from the trap-door that players will not be able to look at it.

This is a picture of it:

Coordinates for Contest

Everyone participating had to guess a number six times- one time for each trap-door number.  The first and second numbers were between 1-10, the third and fourth numbers were between 1-20, the fifth number was between 1-25, and the sixth number was between 1-50.  Another option for the answers could be for the judge to pick their own coordinates (if you think anyone has looked before-hand to see what the answers are).  The 500g prize went to the player with the most amount of winning guesses (closest number to the answer wins each time).

After all of this, the party moved to Vashj’ir to do the whale shark kill for the achievement.  We did this at last year’s party, but we decided to do it again for newer guildies who didn’t have it.

Reflections on Guild Survivor Event

Tonight I finished the video for The East Kingdom’s Guild Survivor Event from last month.  It is now on youtube as shown here:

So looking back on the event, there were some mistakes made that I would correct if we did the event again.  Also some changes I might make.  I have noted some of these in the previous posts one and two, but here they are again:

1) For the timed raid- I really think Kara chess would have been the most awesome, but we had an entry glitch as well as someone we needed to be there not available if I remember right.  So make sure you have one person from each team do Kara up to chess before the event so it will be ready to go.

For Kara I would send a judge in with the team, but no help should be given.  For what we did though, which was VOA- next time I would not send judges in.  It should just be whichever team comes out first wins.  If one team is missing a healer or a tank from losing this role in the first round, they will have to do the raid without that role.

I would also make some other changes to the timed raid- more of an incentive given to the winning team and maybe a random elimination instead of voting off people so early in the contest.

2) The biggest mistake I made in planning the event was the Food Race for night two.  I don’t know what I was thinking, but I planned a PVP objective for all alliance in a regular zone.  Obviously this was completely wrong.  Any kind of PVP event like this should be in an arena area where everyone is flagged.

3) One thing I noticed when watching the video footage is that in every foot-race the three retribution paladins were in the lead.  Be aware that they are one class that has a speed run talent in their tree.  If I do the contest again, I think I will somehow have to make it where ret paladins (and I think BM hunters?) will have to race in a secondary spec.

Those are the only things I have thought of so far though because it was an awesome event!  Very much fun was had, and I had a great time planning it.

WOW Guild Survivor Event – Day 2

After the awesome first night we had with our first ever Guild Survivor contest, it was time for night two!

Before night two started, I had to first mail the remaining contestants a few things: a lavender shirt, one piece of buff food, and five jugs of bourbon.  The food and drinks were for that night’s challenges.

Then I had to move a few toons around to the new locations as well as toons to film with on FRAPS.  (I do not recommend trying to make decent FRAPS movies while dual-boxing, total pain.)

The final five contestants- Wynlock, Anarius, Dwamli, Poonedman, and Bigbearface- were welcomed back with a summon to Jaguero Island in Stranglethorn Vale.  They were again reduced to only two pieces of clothing gear – no weapons, trinkets, or engineering or run speed buffed gear.

Final five before the first challenge

CHALLENGE 1- Fight for Food
The objective of this contest is to race from the top of Jaguero Island to the first pirate boat (South).  You must board the boat, eat your food until you get a buff, then race back to our starting point.  The trick to this race was supposed to be that everyone was PVP flagged and allowed to do what I referred to as “annoyance PVP” to each other in the combat zone, which was the island and the boat.

Rules- The players were told that they could interrupt someone eating with one unarmed punch.  They were also allowed to use knockback spells and CC spells like stun, sheep, etc.  Since we are on a PVE server, I made the rule that if anyone killed another player during the challenge, it would immediately end with the killer being the one eliminated… we did not want any deaths.  (If you are on a PVP server and want to do this contest, you could certainly change this to full-blown PVP…up to you.) Once players leave the combat area, no more PVP is allowed.  The first player back gets immunity and a reward.  The other four players go to tribal council to vote someone off.
Other rules were… no mounts, no swimming or running buffs, no water walking.  I had one judge on the boat, one on the island, and I covered the Jaguero Island portion.

Results-  For whatever reason, even though all contestants left party and were PVP flagged- they were not allowed to attack other alliance in this area.  Kind of a bummer, but some of the contestants were kept busy enough fighting the pirates on the boat.  I didn’t note who came in first, but the reward was just a fun potion – elixir of giant growth.  Wynlock was votes out during tribal council.

CHALLENGE 2- Walk the Plank
The second summon was to a boat in Vengeance Landing, Howling Fjord.  One at a time, the remaining four had to first fly up to the boat mast, drink their five bourbons to get the smashed buff and blurry monitor, and then run (no walking) the mast up and down until they fall off.  The player with the shortest amount of time on the mast/plank is eliminated.  I used the stopwatch on the minimap clock to time them.

Dwamli doing his walk

Results- Dwamli out.  Ironic for a dwarf.

CHALLENGE 3- Cross-Country Race
The players then accepted a summon to the far left pier of Stormwind Harbor.  They  were instructed to first jump into the water and swim to Westfall.  Once there, they had to use their riding mount to travel to Moonbrook and find a one of my alts who was hidden in a building.  The last one to arrive is eliminated.

Rules- No swim speed buffs, no water walking, no flying mounts.  I had a judge on the Westfall beach and another judge watching from that point to Moonbrook.

Results- Bigbearface eliminated.

CHALLENGE 4- Battle of the Minds!
The final two contestants, Poonedman and Anarius, accepted the final summon to Nesingwary Camp in Sholazar, specifically the area surrounded by tents in front of Nesingwary himself.  Using the stopwatch again, I gave the two players one minute exactly to look around this area (from Nesingwary to the tombstone-like markers in front, and from the tent on the left to the one on  the right).  The goal: to be able to answer the most questions right about what they observe.

Rules- They can talk to the NPCs and walk around.  After one minute is up, they have to hearth.  All quiz answers are whispered to the leader (me).

The Questions:
1) How many beds were in the inn tent?
2) What is the pet alligator’s name?
3) What race is the toon with the apple on his head?
4) Korg’s cleaver is in what- a fruit or a veggie?
5) What does the stable master sell?

Results- Believe it or not, it was a tie (!) with both players getting four questions right.  I was a little shocked, but fortunately I had prepared a tie-breaker question, which was:
How many animal skulls are piled around the tents?
The player with the guess closest to the answer would be the winner.

THE WINNER AND NEW GUILD SURVIVOR CHAMPION WAS….

Grats to Anarius, who now has a new Mekgineer’s Chopper!  So close!

As I mentioned in the first post, I will be making a short video of this event in the future, but I have to repair that computer before I can start it.

Thanks to everyone from my guild who participated in this event!  Also, thanks to Gingerbell and Secondchanct for assisting me in judging!  Look forward to doing this event again next year!

WOW Guild Survivor Event – Day 1

I have wanted to host a WOW Guild Survivor event for a LONG time… finally it has started!

First I had to get my guildies interested in the contest because I needed ten contestants that could commit to two nights.  So a few of us farmed mats and got guild bank funding to make a Mekgineer’s Chopper as the prize.  I also constantly mentioned the event in guild chat and the guild facebook group to get sign-ups.

Next I came up with what the challenges would be.  I researched the Survivor TV show online and modified some of the actual challenges to work in WOW.  I also had to come up with winner rewards, which of my toons to park at each location, and the order of events.

Last, I wrote a complete script out in a notebook of everything that would be directed on vent.  I wanted to make sure ALL rules and directions were written out so there would be no getting around them or anything forgotten to be mentioned.

Right before we started the event last night, I decided who would be on each tribe.  I wanted to try to make the teams even as much as possible so I mixed raiders with non-raiders and had no more than two of the same class on a team (this may or may not be possible for you).

So here is a summary of what happened during our first night of Survivor.  I unfortunately forgot to make screenshots until the end, but I will eventually be making a FRAPS video.

– The red shirt team named themselves The Santa Brigade consisting of:
1) Poonedman- ret pally
2) Wolfyports- mage
3) Dwamli- ret pally
4) Everiel- holy priest
5) Bigbearface- druid

– The blue shirt team named themselves Poon-Slayers consisting of:
1) Imorph- feral druid
2) Anarius- ret pally
3) Wynlock- hunter
4) Salvations- pally
5) Lukethorcozz- DK

Everyone was allowed two pieces of gear to wear at the beginning – no weapons, trinkets, or engineering-buffed items were allowed.  Minions and hunter pets were dismissed.  The two tribes were summoned by myself and another judge to The Ruins of Feathermoon in Feralas.

CHALLENGE 1- Island Race
Everyone lined up next to a large rock on the North side of the island (in the water).  The challenge was to race around the island one time, stop for a buff (we used blessing of kings) at the rock, then race around again.  The first team with four members back would win.  The first back overall would get a reward, and the last member of each team back would be eliminated.

Rules- No mounts, no swim or run speed increases of any kind, no walking on water.  You may swim or run on the beach, but the island must not be crossed.  (We had a third judge watching for this on the South side of the island.)

Results- Most of the race was the same people ahead because everyone was running on the beach, so I added a twist towards the end that they had to swim from the broken pier to the rock.  I don’t know if that changed anything or not.  Dwamli was first overall and received A Treatise on Strategy book.  Wolfyports and Imorph out.

CHALLENGE 2- Chess Battle
(this is what we had planned to do, but one team was glitched and couldn’t get into the raid without being teleported out, so we had to move this challenge to VOA- see results for details)
We had a few people get saved to Karazhan right before the chess event.  Our plan was to have each team do the chess event, and the fastest time would win.
The winning team will each get a reward, but both teams go to tribal council after this event and vote for one player to leave.

Results- Since we had to move this to VOA, I had to allow everyone to put their gear back on.  I allowed fish feast buff and a tank pally aura for each team, but no other buffs including hunter aspect were allowed.  I added a judge to each team, but going back I would not do that…one team thought Poon-Slayers had an advantage because my healer went with them.  Just keep judges out and have the first team that exits the raid with the bosses down the winner would be my advice. In the end, it didn’t really matter too much if either team had an advantage- all I gave as a reward to the winners were some smoke flares, and both teams still had to vote someone off.  This challenge was mainly for fun and helping everyone decide who they wanted to vote off.
Poon-Slayers won with Salvations and Everiel being removed from the tribes.

CHALLENGE 3- Cozy Fire Race
We got the remaining tribe members to Darkshore for the last challenge of the night and went back to the two pieces of gear rule.  The tribes had one member assigned to each of three different locations- Grove of the Ancients as the starting point, Eye of the Vortex (top of the hill), and the end of the pier at Ruins of Auberdine.  This foot-race was sort of like a relay race with each team member having to lay down a cooking fire (make sure everyone has trained cooking before the event) to signal the next team member to take off.  The finishing point was the flight path at Lor’danel.  Everyone on the winning team gains immunity.  The losing team votes off another member from their team.

Rules- No run speed bonuses of any kind, no mounts.  Must take the road North as your path.  Each member must wait for the fire to be down before leaving their spot.
Lukethorcozz was voted off, leaving two members on the Poon-Slayers.

Second checkpoint after fires had been laid down

The remaining five were given two minutes to reform as a new lavender tribe with a new name.  They named themselves Imorph-Slayers.  The remaining five- Poonedman, Anarius, Wynlock, Bigbearface, and Dwamli- will be competing against each other as individuals on the second night of the event.

Stay tuned for more Survivor news after tonight!

In my previous spring party post, I did not mention the outfits I wore…so here they are!

Chatmay is my main as well as guildleader.  She wore:

Before the Party

Felheart Horns
Elegant Robes
Spire of Sunset
Gossamer Gloves

If you don’t have the Spire weapon, you could substitute the Dreamseeker Dandelion offhand.

Then there is Druid Gaga, our guild mascot.  Her spring party outfit used yet another stand-out helm- this time Stylin’ Purple Hat.

The outfit also included:

Bandit Jerkin
Warbear Woolies
Sandals of the Insurgent
Waterworn Handguards
Red Sparkler (not shown)

Here is another picture of the Druid Gaga outfit at the party location:
